About the Author
School Zone Publishing Company began as The School Zone Learning Center in 1972. The Learning Center was a retail teachers supply outlet, specializing in sales to teachers, with two stores in Grand Rapids, Michigan. About 1974, schools instituted changes in educational methods that affected the home and schools. Changes included introducing new teaching methods in math and English and eliminating workbooks provided on a shared basis for home use. With these changes, parents experienced difficulty finding educational material for use at home. Local parents turned to the Learning Centers, requesting workbooks and other at-home teaching aids. In response, the Centers formulated six workbooks and printed 1,000 copies of each. The books sold out in six months. An expanded workbook series was developed and received equally enthusiastic acceptance. School Zone Publishing Company was incorporated in 1979. A new line of workbooks had been written and illustrated by late 1979. In January 1980, the line was printed and School Zone began operations. Market response was extremely favorable. The product line has expanded yearly and currently includes almost two hundred educational products.

Great early reader book.

"I Want a Pet" is a truly great book for beginning readers. The illustrations are wonderful. The story is engaging. The words are age appropriate and the flow goes smoothly. My kids loved me reading this to them, and then they were reading it to me. Great book.

Not the Book you See

I expected the book that is shown. The one I got has a new illustrator I guess, because instead of a boy character, there is a girl. I knew the storyline from teaching, and the text is not quite the same and it goes on longer. I don't think the pictures are as strong as the original. It was for my grandson, an emergent reader, so I'm not as keen to give it to him now.

Jerry Mike (The Dagger) Sage

I served in Korea with "The Dagger" in 1954. He was the Battalion Commander of the First Battalion of The 5th Regimental Combat Team and I was the Battalion Operations Specialist in the same unit. I lost all contact since 1952 until I learned he had written this book. I only knew then that he had served in the OSS, that he wore a Solingen dagger. It was really good to play catch up on him. I only wish he were still alive. His contribution to the Green Berets was large. The funniest thing is that he was serving with the Green Berets in Bad Toelz, Germany when I was working in the same area teaching spooks to do the same kind of work that he did in Africa. How do I rate the book? Excellent, but then I am probably just a little bit prejudiced. It is a great read for enthusiasts of books of this genre.

Combines Adventure and Factual History

Sage describes his actions as a commando in the African theater in World War II, his subsequent imprisonment, and his escape activities. Sage consistently accepted challenges boldly, with considerable courage and cleverness. For example, when a German civilian demanded that he shows his identification papers (while he was on the lam after an escape), he coolly said: "Not for you!" When a German woman began a conversation with him that exceeded his limited German skills, he faked deafness and made a gesture indicating that a bomb blast had deafened him. The ruse worked.

While in Stalag Luft III, Sage worked as a stooge and penguin. He set up numerous diversions. When the garden in which the sand was dumped grew noticeably higher than the surrounding soil, he deftly disguised this by placing a row of stones around the garden. When a suspicious German would not leave the area, Sage made a deliberately silly request for white paint for the rocks "in order to beautify the Third Reich." Predictably, the goon walked away in disgust.

Throughout this book, Sage emphasizes his strong Christian faith. While in solitary confinement, he often recounted Scriptures from memory. Sage also experienced numerous answered prayers, some of which were spectacular. For example, when being surrounded by a dog-wielding posse during one of his escapes, he prayed for a swamp in which he could submerge himself and breathe through a straw (based on a movie he had previously seen). He fully realized that there were no swamps in that part of Germany. But he prayed, and his prayer was answered almost immediately. He came upon a body of water in which he could hide, and he did so successfully.

Sage also recounts his experiences in war-torn Poland, providing details seldom seen in the writings of non-Polish authors. Sage saw the ruins of Warsaw caused by vindictive Germans following the Warsaw Uprising, whose doom had been guaranteed by the deliberate 6-month pause of the Soviet armies at the gates of Warsaw. Sage also saw firsthand and described the forced installation of the Communist puppet regime upon Poland that occurred just as soon as the Germans had been driven out--all the result of the sellout of Poland by the USA and Britain in the events up to and including the Yalta Conference. He personally protected a group of Polish women from being raped by Russian soldiers. He saw firsthand the widespread robbery of Poles by the Russians. They took whatever of value that the Germans had not taken first. He described the Poles as very generous, as they shared things with Sage and his men even though they had very little left after the German and now Russian occupations of Poland.

The autobiography of an American hero

Jerry Sage was one of the original members of the OSS, the pre-World War II military intelligence agency which eventually became the CIA. After America's entry into the war, Sage was captured by the Germans in North Africa (he convinced the Nazis he was actually a paratrooper--otherwise they would have shot him on the spot) and was sent to a prison camp within Germany istelf. He escaped from the camp numerous times, and aided British officers in staging the famous "Great Escape" (the Steve McQueen character in the film about that escape was based on none other than Jerry Sage).
His autobiography is a riveting account of the long years in (and occasionally out of) German captivity--and goes on to describe the even more facinating life that Sage lived after the war, working covertly behind the Iron Curtain to subvert yet another savage dictatorship.
"Sage" is difficult to find today, but it's worth the search. For those who were unlucky enough to never have met Jerry Sage, who died a few years ago, it is an unforgettable history lesson, told by a genuine American hero.
For me, it's all that... plus a reminder of a brave man whom I was proud to call a friend.

What a disappointment

I bought this book wanting more of want I got in the first volume of The Crow and all I got was utter disappointment. To make something great you need to spend time with it and none was given to this book. The Crow in this book lacks in so many different areas I dont have enough room to even list them all. The number one lacking area of the Crow is the underdevelopment of his relationship to his loved ones, which helps the reader connect with the crow and want the revenge the crow needs to find peace. In the first Crow book the memories of the love fueled the fire of anger and revenge for Eric, but for Joshua, the new Crow, has none except for the actual killing of his family which happens over a century ago. Oh and have I mentioned the actwork in the book is sub-par in comparision to that of James O'bara. Thank god the third volume has a better story line, more development, but not enough, and the artwork is increasingly improved, but by the same artist. I must say that if I had never read the first volume then this book probably would have scored higher in points with me.

Exploring the Crow mythos

What is most impressive about this, and the other three sets of comics about the Crow that Kitchen Sink Press published (just before closing down their comics department) is that they truly explore the Crow mythos in a way City of Angels never did. Each comic explores and expands a different area.
In Dead Time Joshua, a native american farmer, is killed, but he doesn't return straight away. In fact, it is 100 years later when he bursts out of the ground. He hunts down the killers who, reincarnated, nevertheless start again on their life of crime. He gives them a chance to repent, and they do not.
Now the question to ask is this - had they not been evil men, just stupid, and had returned, led a different life, been good citizens and all of that, would Joshua have come back?

Not bad, but not really up to par

I thought the art was reasonably well-done, though it ain't James O'Barr's drawing. The story wasn't all that bad, pretty original, but it seemed kinda stupid to me. I mean, Confederate soldiers reincarnated as a biker gang. Not really all that far-fetched, but why would the Crow wait that long? I mean, let's look at our past Crows...one year, months, weeks, days, same day... I guess, revenge requires a sense of timing too, though it really didn't work for me. I also didn't feel a lot of the emotion I felt with O'Barr's story. I guess, I'm so used to the lyricism and poetics of the original, that anything less just seems like crap to me. Anyway, this book is work a look, but I honestly do not think that any Crow comic will ever be as good as the original.
