Poorly-written book handicaps self-learning

This is an extremely poorly-written book, I do not recommend it for learning about experimental design. I am an engineering graduate student and need to learn about experimental design for my thesis, and this was one of the first books I read. This was a mistake. The author uses terms without defining them, obfuscates the terms he does define with his poorly-chosen examples, introduces confusing and ultimately useless concepts about experimental design, and to top it all off, the terminology that is used is not shared with any other textbook in the field (none that I could find, anyway), meaning the user is left twisting in the wind, without recourse to a better or alternative textbook. The index is also poor, which is not a surprise - if the author can't be bothered to define his own terminology, why would he bother to provide a thorough index? This is one of the worst volumes to pick up if you are trying to learn experimental design on your own.

incredibly comprehensive, a Good Read

For some time now there's been little published in English on Stockhausen, Maconie's work here makes up for lost time, You can however study with Stockhausen himself if you rather not simply read a book,that real-life, real-time reality fixes seems to be the "buzz" now. You can be a "Survivor" yourself after spending time with Stockhausen and his incredible approach to making music/art/time/space/timbre/mists/clouds/lines/texts; he offers courses each August in Kurten a suburb of Cologne.

Maconie studied with everyone in the European avant-garde,and has been there for premiere performances and knows both sides of the fence, the theoretical/conceptual and performative,and has wonderful insights into not only where certain works are situated within Stockhausen's creative evolution, but the performance problems, and responses to current or latter day reality.

Maconie writes well with metaphors created from popular culture, Buster Keaton,films to situate Stockhausen's rather austere,cold work at times within a larger context of the here and now. We learn however that deep down Karlheinz is a bit of a conservative,having his own fixed points of "comfort zones" throughout his massive oeuvre yet harboring an aesthetic still for innovation,for the unknown not ever succombing(arguably) to the vagaries of the marketplace with repeatable works and gestures, or throw-away art. He has takened issue for example with American Pop Art as a means of escaping the issues of contemporary expression, and Stockhausen always replaces escape into entertainment(popular forms, tunes, nefarious corrupted minimalism, improvisation copy-cats) with hard-work, the Protestant ethic as Weber has said.
But the operas under LICHT are in fact reponses to the current scene, of feminism,myth and cosmology of the moment "Montag",then childhood somewhat autobiographical in "Donnerstag", or war and violence in "Dienstag",Tuesday, the god of Mars,and the first opera on evil and corruption-darknesses, Lucifer's Dreams as in "Samstag". Each opera is given wonderful discussion,with verbal descriptions of what occurs on stage. Still this is an incredible book. . .

Maconie's questions often border between hostility and misunderstanding

Stockhausen's responses are patient, insightful, and against all odds, illuminating. Genius and "pushing the envelope" are often met with disdain. His achievements are above reproach.

Effect without cause, music without analysis

This book is a great way to convince oneself that Stockhausen (and Maconie) shouldn't be taken seriously. Maconie opens the book by introducing his main problem: his intention was to show where Stockhausen's pieces came from, however the composer doesn't believe in causality (cause and effect) and was thus unwilling to help him. While this was funny at first, hundreds of pages in this difficulty becomes tedious. Maconie replaces actual comparison and demonstration with bare assertion and simple alignment, mentioning things next to each other without actually demonstrating a connection. Left without any explanations from the composer for decades of work the author seeks his own explanations from the writings of Stockhausen, contemporary music, events, and art, and his own obsessions. These include Cocteau's Orpheus and contemporary rave culture including "dangerously" loud music and drug use. Though the back of the book says, "Maconie wisely avoids technical analysis," I would have appreciated some.

The Bible for Agaves

This is a great reference for anyone interested in Agaves. Yes, it is 1982; yes, there are no color photos. But there is more information on Agaves in this book's 670 pages than most people can imagine, including habitat and distribution, detailed descriptions, cultural uses, keys to various Agave groups, and much more. If you love Agaves (or just studying them) you need this book.

If you want in-depth Agave information, you won't be disappointed.
I enjoy having this in my Desert Landscape collection as a reference. Expensive but it is a textbook

Beware of Slim Volumes!

As they say, "beware of slim volumes"... this book while not a "big book" it is packed with vital information on navigating the complexities of human relationships. Dr. Skeen uses the Schema Theory which was appealing to me in examining my patterns because of my repeating of destructive, self defeating behavior in relationships. Of all the books I have read on relationships, this book clearly helped me identify the root causes of my struggles in relationships. Unlike some books on relationships, this one is not only theory but practice. Dr. Skeen thoughtfully engages the reader with worksheets and exercises which truly engaged me in the process of honestly evaluating my truth and my part in the dynamics of my relationships. The book is very helpful because no matter if you are the "critical partner" or not, there is ample understanding for all parties. The book is not a "blame book", it's a book of deepening understanding, empathy and most importantly healing solutions. Because the Schema Theory is about addressing repeating destructive patterns in relationship that are related to childhood, this work gets to the real causes of our reactions and difficulties in dealing with others, and truly helps the reader create solutions and ultimately healing and healthy choices.
Dr. Michelle Skeen also has a great website which I highly recommend, [...]. The website also has links to her weekly radio show, "Relationships 2.0", which is in limited distribution in California radio markets. I predict Dr. Skeen's work and media exposure is just beginning, keep your eyes and ears tuned to her. She has valuable workable solutions to the challenges of improving relationships. This book is a staple of my self improvement, and I cannot recommend it enough as a path to growth!
