Interesting, but sometimes a hard read

I wanted to increase my knowledge of the Volksdeutschen in WWII so I was happy to find this book.
It is a wealth of information, organized by national origin and service (Wehrmacht, Waffen SS, Police, etc).
There are also interesting personal insights from those that served or avoiding serving. The photos
added nicely to the book.

My only criticism is that the translation into English is rough. This sometimes detracted from my
ability to understand exactly what the author was trying to convey. I'm not sure that it was ever
proofread by a native English speaker - that would have enhanced the readability of the book.
Overall, though, I was able to muddle thru. I would recommend it, but be aware that you have to
be prepared to occasionally struggle with the translation.

Good book document the massive recruitment of ethnic german

Little known aspect about ethnic germans who served in each branch of the german military in WW2. The exact number and location of ethnic german is giving. The german military did a massive recruiting campaign to enlist the help of thses ethnic german to fight at the front. Some whole units are made up of them.

A good source of reference

While this is a good piece of work, one that is nicely packaged and adequately illustrated, I found it, in places, somewhat terse. This may admitedly have more to do with the nature of the subject than with anything else. Moroever, as this work is presumably translated from Grerman, the tranlsation did, ocasionally, leave something to be expected. On balance I would recommend this book to military history enthusiasts as well as to anyone interested in that turbulent period of European history.

Grade 2-4-Gilchrist has clearly done substantial research for this collection of folktales from countries along the ancient trade route. She has uncovered so much information to supplement the folklore that she includes an introduction; a character called the "Spirit of the Silk Road," whose two-page spiels preface each individual story; and two pages of facts at the end of the book. The result is a collection of seven tales, somewhat weighted down by the burden of explanatory matter. The stories themselves are unusual enough that libraries with large folklore collections or with a strong interest in Asia may want to purchase this title. A few of the selections are reminiscent of European or American variants. "Clever Ashik" is similar to the riddle-solving "Clever Gretchen" and the wish-granting "Magic Saddlebag" is like Jack's magic tablecloth in "Jack and the Northwest Wind." Other tales are more culture specific, such as "Monkey and the River Dragon" from China or "A Rainbow in Silk" from Uzbekistan. Gilchrist's writing is bland, showing little variation as she moves from people to people. Mistry's gouache paintings illuminate the costumes, architecture, and terrain along the way. Gilchrist records the folklore about dragons, demons, goddesses, spirits, and camels handed down through the ages along the ancient trade route between East and Westfrom Tehran in Persia to Lanzhou in Chinacommonly known as the Silk Road. In ``The Bride with the Horse's Head,'' a mother who promises her daughter's hand in marriage to the person who rescues her husband from robbers, then learns that the rescuer is a horse who wants his prize. Geography, Culture, and Great Stories!

This has been a favorite for our kids from about kindergarten on up, and perhaps even a bit earlier. In Bearfoot Book style, this book includes a full curriculum of art, geography, religion and history in the form of plain old good, engaging stories. The silk road slinks from China through the deserts of Central Asia and into the Middle East, and in this age when so much new history is being written in Central Asia and the Middle East the stories and the accompanying discussions will really help orient your kids to the broader world.

Among the stories that have struck our kids the most are "Monkey and the River Dragon", which should keep the kids laughing through the whole story, and "The Bride and the Horse's head", a story with more pathos and tragedy.

The art in this book particularly stands out, even with the high standards usually set by Barefoot Books, and the maps are a particularly colorful delight. Among kids books, this is one of the better selections when you are reading to children that span all the elementary school grades, as it has something of interest for the older kids as well as the younger ones.

Great Tales from the Silk Road

This book has a series of tales from the Silk Road countries - China, Uzbekistan, Kirghizstan, and Afghanistan. They are easy to read and interesting. I have Afghan students and recently saw the Afghan treasures show at the National Gallery. This book goes along well with a teacher's unit on this area of the world. We don't teach much about Central Asia and I think we often don't much about it. This is a book that gives the area more life and interest in Central Asia.

Two books in one

The title derives from peshat - the plain meaning of the text - and derash - the interpreted or homiletical meaning of the text in Rabbinic Judaism. The book is divided into two halves. The first half chronicles the history of rabbinic exegesis from ancient to renaissance times. The issue dealt with is the development of methodologies. The ancient rabbis were dealing with their predilection for justified law - that is, interpreting the Bible to justify the traditions codified in the foundation document of Rabbinic Judaism, the Mishnah (and the later Talmud). The second half of the book develops a theology, compatible with orthodox tradition, that accounts for the tension between peshat and derash.

This book is definately densely written, a mere 173 pages including appendices. It assumes a knowledge of the primary texts of Rabbinic Judaism, the medieval commentators (Rashi, Rashbam, Rambam, Ramban, Ibn Ezra), and medieval law codes. Before attempting this book, I recommend first becoming familiar with these sources. Barry Holtz's Back to the Sources is a good book to gain familiarity with these sources.

Halivni is definately in same intellectual vein as the more famous Jacob Neusner. No writer has produced more works on Judaism since Rabbi Judah Hanasi than Neusner. Like Neusner, Halivni writes in a secular scholarly context, however, he exhibits extreme sensitivity toward traditional belief and orthodoxy.

Outstanding and difficult book. Accessible in large part to educated laypersons like myself. His argument really clarifies the stakes in holding the opposites of a deep belief in / experience of the reality of revelation mediated by Torah tradition, on the one hand, and a commitment to the "just the facts" perspective of contemporary secular science (hopefully not scientism), on the other hand.

About the Author
Professor P. Hariharan is a Research Fellow in the Division of Telecommunications and Industrial Physics of CSIRO in Sydney and a Visiting Professor at the University of Sydney. His main research interests are interferometry and holography. He is a Fellow of SPIE (The International Society for Optical Engineering), the Optical Society of America (OSA), the Institute of Physics, London, and the Royal Photographic Society. He was a vice-president and then the treasurer of the International Commission of Optics, as well as a director of SPIE. Honors he has received include OSA’s Joseph Fraunhofer Award, the Henderson Medal of the Royal Photographic Society, the Thomas Young Medal of the Institute of Physics, London, SPIE’s Dennis Gabor Award and, most recently, SPIE’s highest award, the Gold Medal.

What starts as an encounter at a country club turns around two lives and makes for a great read. Anyone who has been involved at a country club knows the attitude of the staff compared to the members. It's fun to see how the girl is treated when they think she comes from a GOOD family compared to a working girl trying to pay her bills. Sometimes a trick can lead to the person you are meant to be with.

The most useful thing about this book is that it introduces pretty much all the currently popular ideas and practices for product management/business analysis applicable to iterative delivery. Each technique is explained within the context where it applies, with some nice tips on when to use it, when not to use it, and how to get the most out of it.

I'd recommend this book to anyone working in an agile or lean software process that needs to discover, analyse or document stakeholder needs. This includes product owners, but also delivery team members who want to improve their requirements analysis skills. People new to this field will find plenty of ways to get started, and experienced product managers will surely discover some interesting gems to try out.

Kent’s book is a useful guide for agile teams, and punctuates the importance of analysis in agile discovery and delivery. He provides an elegant set of principles, a useful set of techniques nicely organized in a Jogger-like format, and makes it real with four case studies. I particularly appreciate Kent’s emphasis on value and collaboration, the distinction between discovery and delivery, and the pithy and powerful summaries in each chapter entitled “If You Remember Nothing Else”. Get it, read it. Reference it. You’ll find Beyond Requirements a valuable guide in your agile work.

I Want This Green Man!

Sweet and fun. This little book had an amazing story. I loved the characters, they were both bright and complex. The male was strong and determined, while the female was smart and confident. I loved the interactions between the two. I really loved how the author told the story of two different species falling in love without losing who they are. Each changed for their love, yet kept the greatness that made them individuals. I am pleasantly surprised at how much I loved the sci-fi alien romance of this story, I look forward to reading more in the future.

A Reading the Paranormal Review

Aww, guys. This one was fun. A human woman who just wants the chance to have her own family gets matched up with a hunky alien trying to find someone to love. SHENANIGANS ENSUE. Well, not shenanigans, exactly. More like cultural differences. And mating fun! Sort of.

I mean, it takes a while to get to the mating part. FOR REASONS. Actually, it's because tall, sometimes-green, and hunky is worried about giving it to his new lady love. You know, because they REALLY GIVE IT TO THE LADIES.

That's understandable, really, since nobody wants to ruin their lady friend on their first time around.

On top of the relationship issues, the lovebirds are also dealing with some dissension in the ranks. As it turns out, not everybody can be trusted and you need to watch your back when you're in full-on mating mode. That's just a good rule of thumb in general, actually.

Bottom line: Liiiiiked it! Fun with a sometimes-green hunk.

This is a sexy sci-fi. Earth of the future is not too wonderful. It seems to be pretty totalitarian--even to the point of forcing women to incubate children if they are single by a certain age, children they don't get to love and raise. But, this unpleasant future also has guardian angels--the angelic type beings of the celestial mates organization that find a partner of another planet for the people who want one.
Our heroine wants a mate, wants children, wants to choose her own way--so she contacts the celestial mates organization and they find one for her on another planet. The first problem is that she has to get to their ship without getting stopped. The second problem is that the mate and she don't really understand each other's cultures.
Don't worry, love conquers all--with some hot sexy scenes along the way.

About the Author

Jack London was an American author, journalist, and adventurer. London s early careers as sailor, fisherman, and prospector provided inspiration for his later writing, and it was only when he returned from the Klondike that London decided to focus on social activism and journalism. He soon became a popular magazine columnist and author, and a prolific commercial writer, penning over two dozen novels, and numerous short stories and poems. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, and the short stories To Build a Fire, and An Oddyssey of the North. London died in 1916.

An excellent collection

Of Jack London's many short story collections, Moon Face is one of the best I've read. The stories vary widely in style and subject, and, for the most part, you won't find the wilderness adventure stories for which London was famous (There is one, out of eight). London liked to experiment with diverse subject matter and literary techniques, often with mixed results. In this collection, originally published in 1906, he is successful on all counts. These eight stories are well-crafted, vividly descriptive, and suspenseful. A few of the stories explore the psychology of murder, and show the influence of Edgar Allen Poe, as does the closing novella "Planchette", which deals with the supernatural. "The Minions of Midas" is a tale of terrorism that's years ahead of its time. "The Shadow and the Flash" is pure science fiction, incredibly imaginative for its time and still exciting 100 years later. The only wilderness adventure story in this book, "All Gold Canyon", is one of London's absolute best. It contains some of his most beautiful descriptions of the natural environment, and a detailed nuts-and-bolts description of the process of gold prospecting. If you're familiar with London's work, you'll love this book. If you only know him from his sled dog stories, give this collection a try and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

A Good Read

In my attempt to switch to a digital library, I've purchased Moon-Face and Other Stories. You can never go wrong with Jack London's books! This one, just as the others I got earlier, is well made and easy to read. I like the active Table of Context that allows me to go straight to a story I want to read. I haven't noticed any mistakes or "bugs" so far. Will keep adding new books to my e-library. Thank you, Amazon, for coming up with the Kindle - what a great way to enjoy multiply books on one small, lightweight device!

I never thought I'd hate a book this much

I never thought I'd hate a book this much. It's not the topic and I didnt expect it to be an easy read either but the whole thing feels like its been copy and pasted together, I get that its the eighth edition but can ya at least make the illustrations your writing about be on the same page you are referring them to? I will only keep this book because its required by my instructor, but if given the option I will NEVER own another book written by richard j fowler!
