This is an advanced text on electromagnetism. It assumes that the student has already completed a course on elementary electromagnetism. It is recommended that the student study other elementary textbooks, e.g.,Beyond the Mechanical Universe by Olenick and Apostol, before tackling this book. A wide range of topics on electromagnetism is discussed. A student who has gone through this book should be ready for Jackson's classic standard text.

does not do what it claims

This book claims to bridge the gap between undergrad book and Jackson's. But I do not find it achieved the goal. It contains some good sections and I use it only as a secondary book. I still have to use Jackson's as my primary source. But that is not to say I like Jackon's. I hate it like a lot of people do, but I do not find a better alternative. Electrodynmics is the only area that I have not found a very good grad level text book for self study. I am only studying the low frequency part. My interest is not in waves. So, my comments only apply to that part.

Too introductory to be really useful

I hate to give this book 2 stars because while reading it I really got the impression that the author was a good guy. Unfortunately I got that impression because he blabs a lot. This book is 300 pages long (not including index/appendices) and honestly could have been done in 90 pages. At first it was nice since I spend so much time reading really difficult books but after awhile I realized that I had read 30 pages and not really gotten anything out of it aside from some anecdotes and a couple tips.
The configuration chapters could almost be replaced with the vendors documentation and some common sense. I say almost because most vendors don't really explain how to set up WEP or the ramifications of SSID broadcasts etcetera.
The security chapter in this book is 9 pages long! Doing a little math...hmmm, 3% of the book. Considering the security implications of going wireless this is ... bad. To be fair he does throw security warnings all throughout the book, but repeating the same general warnings a bunch of times doesn't help.
He also manages to complain about the difficulties of Linux/Unix for about 2 straight pages at one point. He's a Windows guy, fine, I get it. But it's pretty unprofessional to trashtalk in a book. It's also a bit worriesome that the guy we are looking to for technical expertise is so obviously frustrated with something that 14 year olds routinely use.
So who would I recommend this book to? Someone who basically knows how to use Windows to check email but not much else. If you know anything about networking or *nix I wouldn't bother.

I love seeing his painting and in that form of art from him. I also found him very relatable, as he does a very good job explaining his thought process in similar situations that I have found myself in. The Perfect Novel?

The Rebel Angels immediately entered my personal canon of favorite works of literature. Could it be the perfect novel? It features astounding characters, well defined and memorable (especially the unforgettable John Parlabane, almost as singular a character as Liesl in Davies' Deptford Trilogy). It features a page turning plot. I was initially hoping for a literary mystery, along the lines of Eco, when the "lost manuscript" is introduced. The plot doesn't exactly lead that way, but creates its own twists and turns, both comic and tragic.
Davies' fine novel is an erudite display of knowledge, philosophy, emotion. There are no blacks and whites, nor even shades of grey. Each character is peppered alternately both black and white...each an incredibly real person encompassing friendship and selfishness, good and evil.
This is the kind of novel you feel better for having read. It impressed me on each page; a great work of literature as well as a very enjoyable read.

animal house of the mind

It's rare for a novel to be both thoughtful and rather light and frivolously entertaining--"Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" comes to mind, and this book's got the same sort of attitude. At root it's a funny, erudite, gross and at times mean satire of academia as only an ex-academic could produce--the style is (I'm sure purposefully) reminiscent of Rabelais, who's mentioned herein so frequently. On the other hand, it's a charmingly not-too-serious meditation on the variety of paths to wisdom and ways of knowing. I was rather amused by the observation of one character that (I paraphrase) medieval thinking was a mix of muddled religion, folk belief and superstition, while modern thinking is a mix of muddled science, folk belief and superstition. Perhaps the best aspect of the book is the sheer wildness of its imagination, what with Gypsy instrument-stealers and all; it's not at all surprising that Davies was a theater ham as well (there's an indulgent nod to someone I presume is a real-life actor pal of his in here).
On the personal level, I think if I'd read this book at around age 18 it would've had enormous impact on me, both for the academic satire and for the gaining-wisdom thing; I would have taken both aspects far too seriously and probably have been obscurely burdened by the whole experience. Now it's just mostly good unclean fun.--J.Ruch

Outstanding as a text

This text covers the field like no other, giving straightforward and thorough information on a difficult subject matter. Including treatment overviews in each chapter is a special benefit. The questions for each topic are helpful both to student and instructor. As an instructor, I highly recommend this book. I had difficulty attaining access to the website meant to accompany the product. Purchase of the book via Kindle means no CD.

Great User-Friendly Book

In this textbook, Freed writes in a clear and easy to read manner while including a lot of pertinent information. Many illustrations are included to give the reader an understanding of the patologies that cause motor speech disorders. Case studies are included and also many step by step instructions on evidence-backed therapeutic treatments. I will definitely be keeping this textbook for reference when my class has ended.

This is an excellent book for future speech-language pathologists. The book is easy to read and explains the material well. Each chapter explains all of the dysarthrias, as well as, apraxia. Overall great book!

Jason Baehr provides an accessible introduction to virtue epistemology and intellectual virtues, and establishes two main goals. To this end, he examines the difference between intellectual virtues and intellectual faculties, talents, temperaments, and skills, develops a "personal worth" account of the nature of an intellectual virtue, contrasts this account with several others, and provides analyses of two individual virtues: namely, open-mindedness and intellectual courage. The second main goal is to account for the role that reflection on intellectual character virtues should play within epistemology at large. Here Baehr defends three main claims. The first is that the concept of intellectual virtue does not merit a central or fundamental role within traditional epistemology. The second is that it does, nonetheless, merit a secondary or background role in this context. The third is that intellectual character virtues and their role in intellectual life can form the basis of an approach to epistemology that is distinct from but complementary to traditional epistemology. Finally, Baehr examines the relation between intellectual and moral virtues.
