Loved it!

A book with BDSM, pirates and an adventure, how could I resist this?

I've seen this book placed in some retailers as erotic, but I think calling it that does it a disservice. This book is much more than erotica, and while sex does feature heavily, it is more about the relationships and emotional aspects than the physical ones.

Jon is an empath and lives in a run down castle with his stepfather, Reginald, head of the castle guards. Reginald uses Jon's skills on the prisoners in the dungeons to decide who is guilty or innocent. His skills reach the ear of a pirate captain, who decides Jon might just be what he's looking for to keep him one step ahead of the other pirates. For who would try to cheat him if they knew Jon could tell they were lying?

Investigating a murder at the town's brothel, Jon is kidnapped by the pirates and brought on board. Jon doesn't know it, but the reader does, Jon has little choice. Either he joins the pirate band or they kill him, simple as that. It would have been a short book if our hero was murdered in the first few chapters, so the readers can almost guess he'll pick joining the pirates.

I loved this book and I loved Jon. He was an innocent virgin before he joined Captain Baltsaros and his crew, and his confusion over feeling these things for a man was well done, without the book being completely unrealistic. But hey, I'm reading about fantasy pirates, I'm not really worried about realism here :)

As for Baltsaros, for a lot of the book he wasn't a particlularly nice character, but he was a compelling one and I could see how Jon could be drawn to him despite his misgivings at first. Throw in Tom, the jealous first mate and you have the start of an intriguing love triangle and eventual threesome, which I'm not usually a fan off, but it works well for these characters.

All the characters were well-rounded and I adored Katherine, the only woman on the ship who became a sort of older sister to Jon.

Watching Jon blossom from shy virgin into a young man comfortable in his sexuality was wonderful, you almost got to take the journey with him. There is some BDSM in the book, but the scenes are more than just kinky sex, they develop the emotional connection between the characters and the reader gets to see Jon experience sub-space, which a lot of BDSM book just don't do at all or gloss over it. The love scenes are very well-writen (as is the whole book), very sensual and emotionally charged, they sizzle.

There is a good balance of sex, action, mystery, intrigue and jealousy and it makes for a very satisfying read.

If you like your pirates for what they are - rough men who think nothing about murder, kidnapping, stealing, then this might be the book for you. They are also very sexy in here, despite the moral hinterlands they inhabit. A fantastic, sexy read.

Rich and intriguing - Huzzah!

I read this on a flight from DC to Phoenix. I was completely absorbed in it. The characters were rich, mysterious, fallible, and real. No shying away from a bit of controversy and some kinks not perhaps held by all. While this book has BDSM it is not about it at all. No BDSM 101 here. It's all about personalities and circumstances and what happens when you discover what you thought is not what is. There is evil here - and it comes from places perhaps you won't expect. There is redemption of a sorts - there is great drama that hooks you in and just propels you forward. It's not a romance - but it sorta is. I think that's what so cool about it. You delve deep here - in what things people are capable of but it's not overly gritty. Matter of factual more.

It's a great length - bit of swashbuckling and even great female characters who get some "screen time". I'm not usually much for historicals but this is a very meaty book with a lot going on. The writing really shines - very smooth, great structure, and the erotic parts are erotic but this is not even close to too much sex not enough action. There is plenty of both here to satisfy anyone.

Deliciously Erotic & Wonderfully Engaging

I have to say that right from the start "Caged: Love and Treachery on the High Seas" caught my attention with its vivid storytelling, sucking me into the complicated love story that Jon finds himself living as he is caught between two men and the dangerous life that pulls them all together. The story is lush, seductive, erotic, exciting, emotionally charged and incredibly well written. It has a sharp and provocative tone that just makes you feel as if you're taking the journey right alongside Jon as he is twisted, turned and tumbled... in the middle of an epic struggle for love, for possession, for lust and for power. The writing is fast-paced and vibrant with imagery, painting each scene with a fine tipped brush and bringing it to life in a thrilling and alluring way. The novel left me breathless and eager for more, like any good novel should, so I can say with confidence that this was definitely worth the read.

The best text.

If you are interested in learning the actual human effects of a nuclear explosion then this is the book to have. It is a clinical record of one of the atrocities of WWII written honestly and from a dettached point of view. This book is not for the squeemish.

Undeniably important

I'd like to start this review with a quote from the testimony of a second-grade girl in the Genbaku no ko by Arata Osada as quoted in Hiroshima and Nagasaki the Physical Medical and Social Effects of the Atomic Bombings on page 436:

My older brother went off to do compulsory labor and was never seen again. My younger brother was burned all over his body and died the following day at Koi Primary School.... Mother said she was going into town, as there was no good doctor in the country; the day after she got there, she suddenly became much worse. By evening word came from Uncle for us to come, so Father and I and my younger sister set out for town early the next morning. "At last we made it," I thought when we got there, only to find out that Mother had breathed her last a little earlier. Mother's body was burned in an open field by the river. That evening, just as we reached Uncle's house in the country, my older sister died. The day after her funeral, my lovable younger sister also passed away. Father managed to attend my older sister's funeral, but he just didn't have the strength to go to my younger sister's funeral. The temple priest who conducted my sister's rites must have breathed some poison, for he wasn't present at Father's funeral....

Father left this world on the morning of 10 September, worrying all the while about leaving me alone. Before dying, he often said, "I don't want to die. The bomb may have burned our home and our clothes; but even if we have to wear rags, let's stay in the country, just the two of us, and farm for a living."

I have to give this book 5 stars, not because I adored it, but because I feel it is an extremely important and indispensable compilation on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The amount of information in this book is staggering. It is the work of exhaustive research and resource collecting to create a comprehensive tome on the subject with the hope that this knowledge will help prevent further use of nuclear weapons. I think it should be necessary reading for anyone in high military and government positions with the authority to oversee weapons manufacturing and use and those that work in weapons research and manufacturing laboratories.

I don't know much about the science of the atomic bombs, so there were a few chapters in this book that I did not fully comprehend (mainly Chapter 5, "Radiation from the Atomic Bomb") and other chapters that I had less interest in (Chapter 13, "Relief and Medical Care for A-bomb Victims," more of a comprehensive list of movements than anecdotal information), but the chapters on the damages, medical effects, and psychological effects of the bombings deeply disturbed and depressed me.

Other information that is not widely known is the sheer numbers of non-Japanese A-bomb victims. Thousands of Koreans were killed and injured by both bombs as well as workers and students from other Asian countries. Allied POWs were also killed and injured. This is information that I was shocked has not been more emphatically discussed.

A pleasant surprise

While the literature on probability and random signals is enormous, college classrooms have long been dominated by a few classics. New books attempting to compete in this area haven't seen much success in recent years.
As a college instructor, I find this new addition a really pleasant surprise. The style certainly is a notch above many other texts, yet the more important feature to me is the way theories are presented. While mathematical rigor is not compromised, a clear emphasis on fundamental principles and intuitive thinking has its great appeal, especially to students who have not had much experience with random variables etc. As claimed by the author, it is ``extremely instructor-friendly'' because of its Textgraph format. Indeed, the clever mixture of `viewgraph' with the in depth discussion in the book makes it very appealing for classroom use.
Another feature is the carefully compiled problems including self-test problems that should be well received by motivated students. Reading chapter 5 has also been a quite enjoyable experience as it summarizes succinctly major applications of probability theory before it gets to the more advanced topics on random processes. The accompanied user-friendly software is also a plus --- being able to play with various probability concepts will certainly enhance greatly the students' understanding of the subject matter.

Not recommended for beginners

I am afraid I can't wholly recommend this text for people taking a first look at probabilities, especially if they are studying independently. The major problem is Li's lack of clarity and explanation. He just seems unnecessarily confusing and abstract. The book, to an extent, is easy to read. However, for any interested is self-teaching, discard all thoughts of purchasing this book. It is not only outdated, but the professor designed it to teach in the classroom. The professor dislikes people learning with examples, and the examples given skip the steps where it actually applies the information it presents you. It is considerably unfriendly to those who are not attending his lectures.

The lectures include additional information not presented in the book, which is absurd for being a required textbook.

Good classic stories

This is a collection of 10 short stories with publication dates ranging from 1952 to 1969, mostly dealing with interaction between humans and aliens, usually in situations of conflict. My favorite stories from the collection are:

"Call Him Lord"- On a distant future Earth that has been preserved in an ancient condition by a starfaring human empire, the son of humanity's emperor is put to an ancient test. I liked the way the story is set up- Dickson takes an Earth much like ours, and yet makes it strange and alien. He also does a good job of inspiring emotional sympathy for a character that only appears in the last page, which isn't always easy to do, especially when it's not a viewpoint character.

"Ancient, My Enemy"- A group of prospectors and a young anthropology student are exploring in lethally hot territory occupied by primitive aliens when the youngest of the prospectors finds himself the target of a bizarre alien rite of battle. But the savage aliens aren't the only brutes out in the desert, and violence from without isn't the only enemy the young prospector faces. This is my favorite story in the collection, with an interesting alien culture and an emotionally effective conclusion.

"Steel Brother"- A story of a man who guards humanity's frontier's against alien aggression, with an interesting wrinkle- he wears a mechanism in his helmet that contains the recorded thoughts and memories of each man who served and died in his place before him, which he can access by thought. Does he call on that accumulated experience in battle and risk having his own personality swamped, or go it alone without the experience that might be vital to victory? Thought-recording and downloaded personalities are common tropes now, but it was neat to see it in a story from 1952.

"Love Me True"- Nice and creepy, and it has the good kind of twist ending- the kind that surprises you, yet seems obvious when you read the story a second time.

All in all, The Man From Earth is an enjoyable collection. The stories deliver plenty of excitement and some emotional punch. If you like science fiction from this era, or if any of the stories outlined above sound interesting, then by all means check it out.

This is a great compilation of sci fi short stories. None of them end the way I expected them to. I particularly like that it celebrates mankind and all our achievements instead of blaming us for everything.

Bonaire

I did like the book. I thought it had a lot of good info. especially about the beachs and restaurants. It also had good info. on things such as hospital and police numbers and adresses. They described Bonaires history, polotics, and laws ( such as you can't remove anything alive or dead from the water! ). Another thing I learned was that Bonaire actually has mare cacti then palm trees and always stayes within 4 degrees of 82! Bonaire definitely sounds like an interesting and exciting place!

Thought this was a new book, but some of the information is a year or two old and no longer relevant. Good information for the newcomer, but not much for the returning faithful to this beautiful divers island.
