Robert Sherlaw Johnson's pioneering work on the music of Olivier Messiaen has become the foundation stone upon which all Messiaen scholarship is based. In it he discusses all Messiaen's main works, exploring his musical language, the development of his technique, his individual approach to harmony and rhythm, the theological and symbolic aspects of his music, and his use of birdsong. The appendices include a complete chronological list of works, a bibliography and a list of bird names.

Messiaen died in 1992 aged 84. In between the publication of the last edition of this book in 1989 and this final, updated version he composed a further set of masterpieces that are more than a postscript to his compositional oeuvre. This new edition brings the book fully up to date on these and other works and offers additional assessment on Messiaen's influence as a composer.

Robert Sherlaw Johnson (1932-2000) was a lecturer in music at the University of Oxford and a fellow at Worchester College. He was also a composer and Pianist of note who recorded a number of Messiaen's works, including the Catalogue d'Oiseaux, of which he gave the first complete performance in Britain at Coventry Cathedral in 1973. This edition of his Messiaen study has been updated by Dr Caroline Rae.

About the Author

Jay D. White is the Reynolds Professor of Public Affairs and Community Service at the University of Nebraska–Omaha. He teaches master’s courses in managing information, organizational behavior and development, and human resource management; and doctoral seminars in the philosophy of science and advanced public management theory. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles, book chapters, and books in public administration. He is a former Fulbright Scholar at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands.

Perfect for bright or GT kids

I teach GT at the elementary level and am constantly looking for ways to challenge the kids while holding their interest. They LOVE this and beg me to do more. They want it for homework! The problems in the book get progressivly more difficult, but there are clues in the back for those who get stumpted. (balance problems only)

The book has several types of problems throughout- one is a tic tac toe type of grid where kids have to find the missing numbers so that each row and column has the same sum (like magic squares), but I find these are too difficult. There are also multistep problems where a + c = 72 and you know that a = 28, find the value of c. These aren't as much fun as the balance problems. I only do the balance problems with my kids. They are 2 multistep problems per page (which is another reason why the kids probably like it). I highly recomend this book to any math teacher or parent of a kid who fears algebra.

Money well-spent for extra math work! Very fun thinking "games" that don't feel like "homework". Highly recommended! Tape a dollar bill in the back with a deadline to encourage your child to complete the book by a certain date!

A complete reference on cartooning the head and figure.

This book is a clearly written, easy to follow, detailed and concise handbook on cartooning the head and figure by using several different styles and variations, and emphasizing humor and exaggeration. This fully illustrated reference contains over 3,000 step-by-step diagrams and illustrations and is structured into sixteen carefully organized sections that cover the basic and not so basic principles of cartooning.
It includes general topics like caricatures, cartooning styles and techniques, the head and face, the standing, walking and running figure, different positions for the figure, and emotions and facial expressions (the alphabetized catalog of 150 emotions and expressions alone is worth the price of this book). He also goes into specific topics like hands, feet and clothing, pretty girls, babies and children, and sports cartoons. As an added bonus he includes additional topics such as Advertising Applications for Cartoons and Special Problems which cover specific characters like hobos, tramps and the military, and conversations, special attires and crowds, among others.
By studying this book as if it were a textbook on a course, doing all the exercises and reviewing each section afterwards, my cartoons have come to life in a very, very short time.

Excellent!

I own most of Mr. Hamm's books now and all of them are excellent.

Some caution though for comic book artists wannabes, this book

doesn't teach you action oriented cartoons. Get "Action!

Cartooning" by Ben Caldwell instead.

However, Mr. Hamm's book is a classic because it's not just a

how-to book but rather a book founded on good art principles

considering Mr. Hamm isn't just a "cartoonist" but a true

artist.

Get this book! You won't be disappointed.

The greatest intoduction to CARTOONING ever written

"Cartooning the Head & Figure" --by Jack Hamm

Artist and Christian minister Jack Hamm passed from this world at the age of 81. He illustrated the notable cartoon strip characters "BUGS BUNNY" and "ALLEY OOP" early in his career as an artist. He wrote and illustrated over 25 books on drawing. He pioneered an early TV show on drawing instruction in the Dallas/Houston Texas area.

I admit I am not an expert on fine art, but after reviewing many books which teach beginners HOW-TO-DRAW, it is my sincere opinion that Jack Hamm is the finest instructor America ever produced. Hamm almost never composed text, or used wordy explanations about drawing something. Hamm drew you a picture or series of pictures and showed how it might be done. He did not do this ..."sometimes" in his books. Hamm did this ALL THE TIME, whether it was cartoon figures, seascapes, landscapes, or drawing the human figure.

That is why any effort to list all the contents of his book, "CARTOONING THE HEAD & FIGURE" staggers the human imagination. I might be sitting at the computer for several hours, just listing the contents. Hamm shows how to draw every possible human emotion. Pages 22 & 23 alone are specific instructions in how to draw particular parts of the face to yield a human feeling.

The amazing thing is, Hamm is offering a book not only that adults can use; rather, Hamm is offering a book that CHILDREN can use. This book is in a class by itself, just as is Hamm's classic on drawing the human figure. Hamm's books are one of the richest treasures ever produced on American soil.

Awesome story but be warned it is a cliffhanger

I have found a new author to add to my top 5! Everything about this book was top notch, from the writing to the characters and the world that they live in. However ... Why Couldn't Anyone Warn Me That This Is A CLIFFHANGER! I actually jumped up and yelled no when I went to flip to the next page on my tablet and there wasn't one. I really don't respond well to cliffhangers because I can't "finish" the story. The only time I ever buy one is if the series set is completed already so I can jump straight into the next book. I had to wait more than 24 hours to leave a review. And ... as you can see, I'm still touchy about it. A little warning would have been nice. I could have followed the author until the next book came out and then bought them both or I could have bought this one now and left it in my library to read after it came out. I still had to give the book and the author the respect they deserve and not drop any stars because I wouldn't want someone to see a low star rating and walk away from this tremendously engaging story.

I'm conflicted...

Okay, so let me say that I really enjoyed this book. The banter is great and I really liked the heroine. I laughed several times and I am eagerly awaiting the next book.

Now, the bad....
This book really needs a content editor. Like really REALLY needs an editor. The grammar and spelling was fine. At least, I didn't notice many issues there... But the content...

The heroine would say "I'm leaving" then something would happen like she would pass out, or have a single conversation with someone (she said she was leaving a lot) and then she would stay. None of the other people she lived with ever asked her about it. It reminded me of a small child getting mad and saying I'm going to run away from home! Just so the parent pays them some attention.
And this other time, she asked all the Paladins to bind themselves to her and they all refused. Cause they're the knight rejects, although you never find out why with most of them. Then a few days later she sticks up for one of them and all of a sudden every single one of them want to bind with her. And just as the last one says that, the hero of the piece picks her up and carries her into the house to go have sex with her. Just leaves all the other knights standing there right after they took an oath...??? Rude much??
Also, is it utterly forbidden for a knight to sleep with a warden? Or just sorta forbidden? Or totally fine in certain circumstances? I'm still not sure, and I read the book thru twice.
Her hair color changes once, the Knights ages and timelines fluctuate.... This is why I think the book needs an editor. It's a great story. And I like the authors style, but the inconsistencies really irritated and confused me.
Also, the cliff hanger ending? Was the weirdest one ever. It's like the book just stopped in the middle of a paragraph. it wasn't in the middle of a battle or a big decision. The book just stopped.

I don't know, I really liked the book and it has tons of potential, I just think it needs some polishing.

Fantastic Find!

I am so in love with the characters Montana Ash has created. She has an amazing gift for storytelling. I was laughing out loud and crying during this book. Only two other authors have had me laughing out loud at work, Alanea Alder and Tymber Dalton.

I love Max, she is such a strong heroine but so vulnerable. I love that no matter the cost she will fight for what is true and right in this world (not to mention her peeps) but at the same time is so soft deep down. I cried so hard when she asked to stay and was turned down by each of the Paladins.
