A Beautiful Story Beautifully Illustrated

Turkey's Gift to the People is a modern adaptation and interpretation of a traditional Navajo folktale. The story relates that one day, a crow saw a great wall of water headed toward the Navajo homeland. Upon hearing of this, the people and animals began to worry. Bear advised everyone seek higher ground in the mountains. Butterfly remarked that mountains are too far away, whereupon Bear advised everyone take refuge in the hills. However, it soon became apparent that the hills were not high enough to protect everyone. Mouse suggested that some giant hollow reeds had chambers larger than any cave. So Beaver began to gnaw on the reed to provide an entrance. However, there were too many people and animals for the lower chamber, so Moose invited Beaver to climb atop his back and Spider spun a web to allow Beaver to gnaw a hole in the upper part of the reed. Suddenly, Ground Squirrel realized that Mr. and Mrs. Turkey were missing. Eagle spotted them and led them to the reed; when they were inside, Wasp sealed the opening so no water could get inside. At that point everyone asked Mr. and Mrs. Turkey what took them so long, whereupon they replied that they were collecting and spreading seeds for the plants everyone would need to rebuild once the flood waters receded. The story acknowledges the close relationship most Native American cultures hold among all forms of life, as illustrated by the fact that cooperation and teamwork enabled everyone to survive the terrible flood.

An All-time Favorite

This book is one of my all-time favorites to read with children. I've given it as a gift for adults as well. It goes so far beyond the description of "a book to read with children at Thanksgiving" that I had to write a review! It actually has nothing to do with Thanksgiving, in the sense of the holiday anyway. It is an exquisitely illustrated book that shares how every member of the community has an important gift that helps save the whole. I've read it to classes to launch discussions about children's own unique gifts, and about how the character's roles relate to careers children can recognize. It's a story that teaches cooperation, caring and acceptance, and gives hope for the future without being trite or preachy. At this time in our world I think it's a great book to introduce the importance of growing our own food and "planting for the future".

Great book, great lesson. Old indian folk tale with a valuable lesson for all ages. Would highly recommend this book.
